At the District Executive meeting, on October 22, a special recognition was given to a member who works in the background to help all the “leaders” in Founder’s District. He remains incognito and stays hidden until needed and shows up online when necessary.
For many years he has produced and published the directory that includes all the leaders of our District. He also expends his service to publish a Regional Directory with leaders of Districts 1, 3, 5, 12, 34, 52 and Founder's.
He has been a member of Astromasters since 1989 and led Founder’s as District Governor in 1999-2000. Because of his dedication the leaders at all levels can communicate successfully as he updates the directory as changes in our great district occur.

My Icebreaker was on October 3, 1956 to Toastmasters Club 121 in Santa Monica where I had a job managing a few engineers working on heat transfer to missiles. When I would go to my simple staff meeting with a few other managers, my heart would pound every time before I had to make a report, and a friend of my wife’s said I ought to join a Toastmaster Club. This was before women were allowed, and since it was an evening club in a restaurant, it was not uncommon to see communication skills be muddied with a few drinks before the talks. Nevertheless, I completed the required “Basic training” manual of twelve (not ten) speeches, and foolishly decided that being home with my wife and two kids took priority over Toastmasters.
Back in July, I shared with all of you that my vision for this year is to inspire more leaders, mentors, and coaches to step up to serve our members. Time flies. The first quarter of this year has pasted. The second quarter is under way. Do you feel more inspired than three months ago? If your answer is no, then the question is what you are going to do about it? How can the Founder’s District help you to be inspired?
October 1 is the time to renew your membership for the next 6 months. It’s not doing anyone any good to just renew your membership and do nothing. At the Toastmasters International Convention last month in Las Vegas, I had a chance to ask attendees a question, “Why are you attending the Convention?” One of the popular answers was to “get inspired”.
Many members told me that they were inspired by just attending the Convention, seeing the opening ceremony and members from around the world. Speaking of the Convention, do you know our District Convention is scheduled to November 7? It is a good opportunity for you to get inspired and network with members within Founder’s District. There are approximately 4,500 members in our district. Don’t miss the opportunity.
There's a tradition in Founder's District. Every year we thank our Immediate Past District Governor (IPDG) for their service to Founder's District and our members by holding a roast, toast, and boast in their honor.

The agenda item to appoint Lionnel Yamentou as the Division E Director at the DEC (District Executive Council) meeting on August 26, 2015 was tabled because of lacking a quorum. Following the Toastmasters International guidelines, District Administrative Manager, Linda Denton, followed up with an email vote process. More than 2/3 of the DEC members responded. The result is to appoint Lionnel Yamentou as the Division E Director.

The DEC meeting was held on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at the tropical and beautiful Radisson Suites in Buena Park. Our District Director, Pan Kao, presided over the 2014-2015 year end awards/celebration.
Deborah Reisdorph gave an educational presentation about "Pay it Forward with New Clubs." She encouraged us to reach out to help other Toastmasters and illustrated the importance of mentoring through her inspirational presentation. She encouraged those in attendance to become a part of the committee or a cheerleader to help the District achieve their goal of starting 46 new clubs in the District during the 2015-2016 Toastmasters year. By trade, I'm an IT project manager. Leadership and communication are two must-have job skills for a project manager. Like most of you, I joined a Toastmasters club to learn communication skills. As it turned out, I found that Toastmasters was actually a better place to learn and practice leadership skills.
In other words, Toastmasters programs provide a safe environment for us to learn both communication and leadership skills. In Toastmasters, five clubs are grouped together as an Area (approximately 100 members), five areas form one Division (25 clubs, approximately 500 members), and the Founder's District has 8 Divisions (225 clubs, approximately 4500 members).
Start the year off right with a membership building program for your club. The Smedley Award begins August 1 and ends September 30. It's simple. Add five new, dual, or reinstated members to your club between August 1 and September 30 and receive a "Smedley Award" ribbon, named in honor of the founder of Toastmasters, which you can display on your club's banner.
Winning clubs will be revealed on the Toastmasters International web site.
Our focus this year will be to build new clubs and grow our membership, sharing the benefits of Toastmasters to more people in our District. Do you have an idea for a new Toastmasters club? Let all members from Pasadena to San Clemente work together to grow quality Founder’s District Toastmasters for 2015-2016 and beyond!
It’s my honor and pleasure to serve as the first ever District Director of Founder’s District. My vision for this year is to help you achieve your goals and to keep Founder’s District focused on its mission, which is to build new clubs and to assist all clubs in achieving excellence.
Together, we can bring about the changes you are looking for. For example, one of the goals for this year is to inspire more leaders, mentors, and coaches to step up to the plate to serve our members. That’s why I chose the theme, “Join and Serve to Prosper.” Serving in Toastmasters is such a wonderful learning opportunity.
Many members in Toastmasters complete 10 speeches and receive the Competent Communicator (CC) award. They believe they have learned it all, so they leave the organization. In my humble opinion, serving in a District leadership role after obtaining the CC award is one of the best ways for members to learn and prosper.
On Wednesday, March 25th the La Palma Toastmasters club (#1412788) celebrated the 5th anniversary of their club's chartering at a meeting attended by City Council members Steve Hwangbo and Michelle Steggell and Founders District Lt. Governor of Education and Training Pan Kao DTM and Area E4 Governor Thomas Nguyen CC ALB. Nearly 25 members and guests attended the 90 minute get together which also included a regular TM meeting.
In order for us to utilize our time more effectively at the Business Meeting on Saturday, April 25, we have put together some of the routine items discussed into a Consent Agenda. These routine items are packaged and accepted as a group. In this package are items that do not need any discussion or a vote. Any District Officer can request the removal of an item from the Consent Agenda if they feel that we should vote on it independently. However, the idea here is to be able to focus on items that need more attention and limit the time spent on the items that are general in nature.
