How often are Project Managers required to be not only leaders, but effective speakers? All the time! Since June 8th, 2010 one of the Project Management Institute (PMI-OC) members, David Shostak, PMP approached the PMI-OC Senior leadership on the possibility of the PMI-OC Chapter helping to support a Toastmasters Club. David, an active Toastmaster himself, realized that there were many benefits to project managers utilizing the Toastmasters program.
Well David is doing it again! He is starting a second Project Managers Toastmasters club in Irvine, CA.
It boggles the mind to think how many people we casually meet on our daily path who have amazing stories to tell. Toastmasters and the Founder's District Speakers Bureau teamed-up with TEDxYouth@BommerCanyon to coach teens on how to share their stories of achievement and self-discovery.
Congratulations to our many local heroes from the mentors behind the scenes to the young speakers that took center stage and now have a powerful message posted on YouTube.
Featured on the Founder's website are three of the eleven presentations:
Staphany Hou, University high school senior (Irvine), will defend the virtues of well roundedness and disprove Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule in his bestseller Outliers.
Gabe Eggerling, at age nine, saw the need for impoverished kids to have access to books and started a library in Peru from the comfort of his home in Huntington Beach.
Mun Jen Ng, a 2013 semifinalist in the Toastmasters International speech contest, shares a timeless tale: the struggle of honoring one's own identity whilst trying to pleasing others.

Contestants at the November 9th conference “stretch the truth” to audience delight!
Speech competitions at the district level are always a treat for spectators and when the affair includes Tall Tales, the entertainment factor skyrockets. The big event, emceed by Contest-master Jeanne Cassidy, was held at the La Mirada Holiday Inn and was the grand finale to an action-packed conference that is sure to go down in the record books as one of the best ever!
Congratulations to the members of Union Bank Monterey Park Toastmasters club, winner of the Founder's Film Award of Fall 2013. Hiram Araoz and Janice Wong accepted the award on behalf of the club at the District Conference on November 9.
When you attend a Founder’s District event, while everyone else is at the front of the room delivering a presentation, or receiving certificates, awards, and acknowledgements, take a moment to glance over your shoulder to the man and woman who are standing at the back of the room, often on top of a chair, with eyes affixed to the viewfinder of a really nice looking camera, and you will likely see Richard or Linda Daugherty capturing that moment in time with their cameras.
